Instagram is testing a new photo-sharing application called “Instants,” designed around automatically disappearing images, according to the company.

The feature is currently being trialled in Spain and Italy, where selected users can experiment with the new format. The app allows users to share photos that disappear after being viewed once, or remain visible for up to 24 hours if not opened.

Unlike Instagram’s main platform, Instants focuses on simplicity and real-time sharing. Users can take photos directly within the app using an in-built camera, but cannot edit them before posting. The company has also restricted uploads from the phone’s gallery, meaning users must capture images on the spot rather than select existing ones.

Text can be added to photos, but additional editing tools or filters are not available. According to the company, this design choice is intended to encourage more authentic, real-life photo sharing rather than heavily curated content.

Meta, Instagram’s parent company, said Instants is being developed as a way to promote more spontaneous communication between users. The app is also being tested as an integrated feature within Instagram in certain regions, suggesting that it may eventually become part of the main platform rather than a standalone product.

The company explained that Instants is intended to differentiate itself from traditional social media posting by focusing on immediacy and temporary content. This approach mirrors trends seen in other messaging and social apps that prioritise ephemeral sharing.

While the testing phase is currently limited, the company has not confirmed a global roll out timeline. However, early trials will help determine user engagement and whether the feature will be expanded to more regions.

If widely adopted, Instants could mark another shift in how users share visual content online, emphasising momentary interaction over permanent digital posts.
